2017 Open USBC
The 2017 Open USBC will select the USA teams for the 2017 Bermuda Bowl, to be held in Lyon, France from August 12-26.
Location & Dates
Entries are now open, and will close on Monday, April 3rd. Additional entries will be accepted until Monday, April 10th so long as they do not change the event format.
There will be an event entry fee of $360 for each team. In addition, each team pays session fees of $150 per session of play ($300 per day). $960 is collected at the time you enter the event: this is the event fee and fees for the first two days of play. The event fee is normally non-refundable after entries have closed. The session fees are refundable if you withdraw from the event.
The 2017 USBC will select both teams for the 2017 Bermuda Bowl. The USA1 format will be 5 stages: the first stage will be a 2-day Round Robin among the non-bye teams; the other stages will be 120 board Knockout matches, starting with the Round of 16 on Sunday, April 30 and Monday, May 1 and ending with the Finals on Saturday, May 6 and Sunday, May 7. The USA2 format will be 5 or 6 stages, depending on the number of byes in USA1. The USA2 stages will parallel USA1, with the Round of 64 (if needed opposite the USA1 Round of 16, the Round of 32 opposite the USA1 Quarterfinal, the Round of 16 opposite the USA1 Semifinal, the Quarterfinal opposite the USA1 Final and the Semifinal and FInal continuing on Monday-Thursday, May 8-11, after completion of USA1. The losing USA1 finalist will drop into the USA2 Semifinal.
The bye teams will be seeded on the basis of Positioning Points, the remaining teams on the basis of Seeding Points.
After the entry closing dates, we will post the lists of Seeding Points for your review.
Through the 2016 Reisinger, and contingent on results in the 2017 Vanderbilt, Diamond has a bye to the Quarterfinals; Fleisher, Strul & Fireman have byes to the Round of 16. No other team has a bye, but any all-US team that finishes first or second in the Vanderbilt will earn a bye to the Quarterfinal and if the Diamond team wins the 2017 Vanderbilt they will earn a bye to the Semifinal. No other team can earn a Semifinal bye. Fleisher and Strul earned PPs with ineligible players, so can not earn byes beyond the Round of 16. Nickell can probably earn a bye to the Round of 16 by reaching the Vanderbilt Round of 8. Fireman, Nickell & Bramley can probably earn a bye to the Quarterfinal by reaching the Vanderbilt final. It is unlikely that any other team can earn a bye. See the Positioning Points Spreadsheet for specifics; note that byes may change after the Vanderbilt.
Thursday, April 13th: Last day to make hotel reservations and be assured of receiving our hotel rate. The hotel may honor the rate for later reservations, but is not required to do so.
Friday, April 14th: Final day to submit System Summary Form and ACBL Convention card. Penalty for late submission of SSF is loss of seating rights in one segment of the team's Round of 16 match per day that the form is late.
Thursday, April 27th: Last day for roster changes.
Seeding, Setting the Bracket
The teams are now listed in alphabetic order; they will be listed in seeding point order as soon after entries close as we get seeding point data from ACBL, subject to change if rosters change or if seeding points are corrected.
When the event has started, you will be able to click here to get to the results page for the USBC. Once there, you can click on the stage of the event in which you are interested.
