Bids that Require Advance Preparation

Kaplan inversion of 1S/1nt over partners 1H opening
Multi 2D openings 1st and 2nd (weak only), Flannery 3rd and 4th
2D over opponents nt = unspecified major
Xfer advances after partner overcalls
1D/2C may be intermediate and balanced

General Bidding Style

12-14 notrumps, and relatively sound openings by today’s standards
Occasional 4th suit major suit opening in 3rd seat, nt opening with 5 card major or wk 2 with 5 card suit (all of which are more frequent from Jeff than Paul)
2H/2S are 9/10-12/13 in 1st or 2nd seat. There are inferences that opening 1 bids with a 6 card major are stronger than 2H/2S bids in 1st or 2nd
One of a major over minor suit opening can be very weak
2/1 game forcing except in comp or 1D/2C. Tend to show a real suit.

Opening Leads AND Leads in the Middle of the Hand

Small leads vs nt promises 108xx or better
K is power lead against nt, so some Q leads can have the K
Parity opening leads from even vs suits (highest spot card affordable)/ 3rd and 5th from odd
A from AK below 5 level against suits
10 or 9 is 0 or 2 higher in middle of hand
Attitude leads in middle of hand
Split highest from KQ or QJ

Defensive Signals

upside down count/attitude
Smith against nt: standard by leaders partner, reverse by leader
Attitude shown on opening lead if dummy wins A or K, else count. If no hope in suit led obvious, suit pref given
