DAILY BULLETIN Friday, July 21, 2006 Editors: Brent Manley and Paul Linxwiler Volume 78, Number 8 78th Summer North American Bridge Championships Gorkin, set-up crew earn awards from directing peers Each year, the Professional Tournament Director Association announces two award recipients in recognition of outstanding achievement and excellent customer service. This year, Tournament Director Bernie Gorkin of Syracuse NY is the recipient of the Tom Weeks Award. The companion honor, the Fred Friendly Award, was given to a group of directors popularly known as the “set-up crew.” Gorkin, who began part-time directing in 1992 and became a fulltime director in 1999, received the Tom Weeks Award, given in recognition of exemplary professionalism. A former computer programmer in the engineering field, Gorkin now splits his time between tournament directing and providing financial planning and income tax services. Tournament directing has an intellectual attraction for Gorkin. “I love organization, getting things in place, the logistics of getting a tournament together. It appeals to my like of puzzle-solving and games,” he said. Gorkin credits several directors for serving as NABC table count: 10749.5 through Thursday evening. Two Chicago-area players attending their first NABC won the National 199er Pairs yesterday by the slender margin of 1.5 matchpoints. Leonard Dubin and Honor Mogul are the 199er champs. They posted a 54.92% score in the morning session and paired it with a 65.34% game in the afternoon to win the event with a matchpoint total of 317.50. Top on a board was 11. Dubin, of Skokie IL, is a retired chemist. Mogul, of Northfield IL, is a horse breeder. They play together at local clubs on an infrequent basis, but the duo was in synch for Thursday’s two-session game. Both players now have more than 100 masterpoints thanks to the first-place masterpoint award of 4.71 gold points and 18.85. In second with 316.00 was Jon Ullman of Stanford CA and Don Recht of Mt. Kisco NY. This was the second second-place finish for National 199er Champs Leonard Dubin and Honor Mogul. Local players grab National 199er title Ullman and Recht in Chicago: in the Collegiate Championship that ended on Sunday, they were on the runner-up squad for Princeton. Thursday’s game was the largest National 199er ever held, attracting 67 tables. The old record of 52 tables was set in 2001 in Washington, D.C. Continued on page 6 Barrett, Seidler lead Fast Pairs GS Jade Barrett and Blair Seidler led the field of 190 pairs in yesterday’s qualifying round of the NABC+ Fast Pairs. Barrett and Seidler led by more than a board: their two-session total was 822.50 (25 top) compared to 786.98 for secondplace pair Rod Caldwell and Stanford Christie. Palmer squad leads Mixed BAM The team of Beth Palmer, Bill Pettis, Bill Pollack, Rozanne Pollack and Lynn Deas posted the high score in yesterday’s qualifying round of the Chicago Mixed Board-a-Match Teams. Palmer’s two-session total was 37. In second with 34.5 was Jeffrey Hand, Gail Greenberg, Danny Sprung and JoAnn Sprung. mentors for him in his career. He praised the late Tom Wolstoncroft and Peter Mollemet, both of the Buffalo NY area, and Burt Garrell, retired, of Rochester NY. Fellow director Peter Marcus described Gorkin as, “the complete package.” “Bernie is one of the best examples of a professional, competent and friendly director. He is not only great in the technical aspects of directing, but he’s terrific with the players as well,” said Marcus. Gorkin also cited his enjoyment of working with the public. “I love being in the middle of a tournament with all the people and the other TDs. I miss playing, but I love directing.” The work of the set-up crew at the NABCs is largely behind the scenes but is vitally important to the success of the big tournaments. Just ask Jeff Johnston, NABC operations manager and leader of the team. The crew, including himself, is Brian Russell, Burnaby BC; Martin Ware, Vernon BC; Tom Marsh, San Antonio TX, and David Cotterman, Kokomo IN. Ware and Johnston have been working together since the 1994 Summer NABC in San Diego. Marsh The set-up crew: Tom Marsh, David Cotterman, Martin Ware, Jeff Johnston and Brian Russell. Mini-Spin 5000 in SF round The teams captained by Gayle Covey, Paul Stern, Jacob Morgan and Kelley Hwang have all survived to the semifinal round of the Mini- Spingold 0-5000 KO. The semifinal matches will feature Covey (#1 seed) vs. Stern, and Morgan against Hwang. ‘Micro’ final today The Minneapolis-based squad of Eric Henderson, Richard Lawson, Matthew Bribitzer- Stull and Jason Bribitzer-Stull will square off against the Georgia team of Edward Foran, Nicolas Hammond, John Hassett and Steve Callaham in today’s Mini-Spingold 0-1500 KO. Wagar final: Radin vs. Kennedy Judi Radin’s squad will battle Betty Ann Kennedy’s team in today’s final of the Wagar Women’s Knockout Teams. Radin leads the same squad that won the Women’s Swiss at the Spring NABC in Dallas: Sylvia Moss, Pamela Granovetter, Migry Zur Campanile, Shawn Quinn and Mildred Breed. Kennedy’s roster features Peggy Sutherlin, Val Covalciuc, Becky Rogers, Linda Lewis and Pam Wittes. Continued on page 6 Continued on page 6 Huge rally propels Hollman in Spingold The team captained by Robert Hollman, stuck 57-1 after a quarter and 85-9 at the half, mounted an amazing comeback in the Spingold Knockout Teams to knock off the top-seeded Russ Ekeblad team 133-127. Hollman is playing with Ron Smith, Billy Cohen, Curtis Cheek, Joe Grue and Bruce Ferguson. Ekeblad had four of the members of last year’s winning team back to defend the title. Since then the school has expanded into three states, and classes are held every day of the week. Mary Mayer-McHugh started dance lessons in 1970 with the Dennehy School of Irish Dancing. During her dancing career, Mary advanced to the championship level by 1972. She started teaching in 1980 with her brother John and became certified with An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelacha in 1982. Mary is also an Irish Music champion tinwhistle player. Many years were spent in Ireland as a teenager competing for world titles and playing music with the best of traditional musicians. Mary has also taught many children how to play the tinwhistle. Paul Mayer began Irish dancing at 6 under the direction of his older sister and brother, John and Mary Mayer. He is an eight-time Mid-America Regional Champion. He has won the North American Championship twice. Paul’s professional career includes numerous television appearances. His most notable big screen moment includes dancing with Jennifer Jason Leigh in the movie Road to Perdition. Paul trained Jennifer, as well as several other actors and actresses, to dance for the movie. The performance will be today at 6:45 p.m. Late night snack Tonight’s late night snack will be ice cream bars. Tonight’s special event Tonight, the NABC is proud to present the Second City Comedy Theater in a performance after the evening session (approximately 11:30 p.m.). Second City, Chicago’s most famous comedy troupe and springboard for several modern-day comedians, will perform just for us. The Chicago Contract Bridge Association is sponsoring this event in honor of its 50th Anniversary. Want to play Mid-Chart conventions? Read this first! Players who wish to use Mid-Chart methods (in events that permit them) must check the ACBL Defense Database for rules governing their use. If you choose to play a method permitted by the Mid-Chart, you are required to do the following: 1. Pre-Alert the opponents about your method prior to the auction on the first board. 2. Have a complete written description of the method available for your opponents. 3. For certain methods, you must provide your opponents with an approved defense from the database. Visit the ACBL web site at www.acbl.org for details. ACBL players: help players from outside North America who wish to use Mid-Chart methods to be aware of these rules. Tours Tonight we have tickets for the World Champion Chicago White Sox Game vs. the Texas Rangers. This trip will meet at 5:45 p.m. at the Hyatt West Tower Entrance on Stetson. Your ticket will cover the entire cost of the trip, including entry to the game, the bus ride and tip to the bus driver. You will return to the hotel approximately 10:30 p.m. (assuming the game is of usual length). For the return trip, you must meet wherever the bus drops you off. Sox games have been sold out for the season and we had to pull strings to get the tickets. It promises to be great! Go Sox!! Top 500 note Lloyd Arvedon of Bedford MA should have been included in the Barry Crane Top 500 update list published in the Thursday edition of the Daily Bulletin. .... Lights, Camera . . . A film company will be in Chicago July 13-23 for an upcoming documentary on professional bridge players. Please extend your courtesy to director-producer Kimberly Dawson and directors of photography Noah Bean and John Orebaugh. Most filming will be in the GNT and Spingold areas following the Lynch team. The producer is interested in hearing great stories (no hands please!) related to people’s obsession with the game and the extreme measures they take to be able to play. Please feel free to e-mail her at bridgedocumentary@yahoo.com. We will make every effort to ensure that filming does not disturb play. If you have any concerns, speak to a tournament director or contact Linda Granell, director of marketing, in the Daily Bulletin office. Remember that these opportunities help promote our game. You also should be aware that your entry blank includes the statement: “The submission of this entry blank constitutes an agreement binding on all players listed hereon: that this contest is governed by the rules, regulations and procedures of the ACBL…” Among those rules and regulations is the following (adopted by the Board of Directors in 1983): “By participating in any ACBL sanctioned event, each contestant, official, or observer of any such bridge contest agrees that said event, or portions thereof, may be filed, recorded or otherwise documented or publicized at the discretion of the sponsoring organization.” Guess the Wagar and win You can win a deluxe poker set. All you have to do is guess the final margin of victory and total IMPs scored by the finalists in the Wagar Women’s Knockout Teams. Write down both numbers and turn in your answer at the ACBL Product Store, Riverside West, lowest level at the Hyatt by 8 p.m. tonight. Three sets will be presented to the three entrants who come closest to the final margin plus total IMPs. 1. . A K 7 6 5 . A K 5 4 3 . K 7 . 8 You have 17 high-card points plus distribution points for the two long suits. You still must start by bidding 1. as opening bidder. Some think that they would like to bid hearts first and then bid spades later, so that they can show a big hand by “reversing.” A reverse (when opener bids a new suit at the two level higher in rank than the suit they opened) always promises more cards in the first suit than in the second. It is true that you would be showing a 17 + point hand by bidding hearts first, but you would also be distorting the shape of the hand by promising more hearts than spades. 2. . J 8 6 5 4 . A Q J 10 3 .4 .K 6 You must open with the higher-ranking suit (spades) even with this weak hand and better hearts. It is all about quantity, not quality. If you start with 1. and partner bids 2., now what? 3. .K Q 4 3 .8 7 3 .A K J .9 3 2 You must open with 1.. If you start with 1. (tempting), then what do you now bid when partner responds 2.. With 3-3 in minors, always open 1.. With 4-4 in minors, always open with 1.. 4. .7 4 .6 5 2 .K 8 7 6 .A K Q 5 Open 1.. If you open with 1. and partner now bids either 1. or 1., you do not have a good rebid. The rules of opening the bidding are all based on having a legal rebid later. 5. .A Q J 6 5 4 .7 .K 9 4 3 .7 3 You are the dealer. What do you open? Not 2.. Your hand is way too good, even though you have the classic requirements that you have heard about: 6-10 HCP and a good quality six-card suit. This hand adds up to 13 points including distribution or if you count points the other way i.e. length, you must use the rule of 20. Add your HCP and the number of cards in your two longest suits. If this adds to 20 or more, open with one of a suit. Either way you have a full opening bid. Start the bidding with 1.. 6. .A Q 8 5 4 .K J 9 2 .7 4 .3 2 Partner opens 1 NT. Now what? You must use Stayman. If you use a transfer, your heart suit will remain undisclosed forever. Here is partner’s hand: .8 7 .A Q 6 3 .A K 7 6 .Q 4 2 You transfer to spades (not knowing that you should always bid Stayman with 5-4 in the majors) and then when partner bids 2., you now bid 3 NT. Your opponents take the first five club tricks. You should be in the safe contract of 4.. Page 3 Daily Bulletin JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS Thinking bridge By Eddie Kantar Dlr: South . A J 7 5 2 Vul: Both . All Pass Opening lead: .4. Bidding commentary: North’s leap to 4. is a splinter jump showing a singleton diamond, strong spade support plus opening-bid values. East’s double of an artificial bid is lead directing. South has a perfect hand for slam: nothing wasted in diamonds, and when South finds the .A plus the heart and club kings in the North hand, he decides to gamble for a grand. Most would settle for a small slam. Play commentary: South can make this contract if East has the .Q or West has the .Q. Common pitfalls in bidding By Barbara Seagram Assuming one of these finesses works, declarer still has to take the right one! When two queens are missing and taking the right finesse means making the contract, play the ace and king of the longer suit (hearts). If the queen doesn’t drop, take a finesse in the shorter suit, clubs. Yes, I know, you may have stopped in six and didn’t have to worry about which finesse to take. But one day you might. Further bidding commentary: Many partnerships use a direct jump from 1. to 4., 4. or 4. (second hand passing) to show a singleton in the jump suit, opening bid values and at least four-card spade support. In response to a 1. opening, jumps to 3. (not 4.), 4. and 4. (second hand passing) are also splinter jumps. A direct jump to 4. is natural showing a zillion spades with less than opening-bid strength. A 1. response to an opening bid followed by a leap to 4. after a minimum rebid also shows long, strong spades with opening-bid strength. Second in the National 199er Pairs were Jon Ullman and Don Recht (see page 1). Page 5 Daily Bulletin To Linda Granell, ACBL’s director of marketing, Mike Develin is one of the rare breed of young people “who has stepped up to the plate” to promote the game of bridge. Develin, 25, writes the blog (a web log) for the ACBL’s Bridge is Cool web site, whose primary purpose is to interest young people in bridge. The web site (www.bridgeiscool.com) has a link on the ACBL home page (www.acbl.org). On his blog, Develin writes about deals he has played and his experiences as a player. He has been gratified to know that he has a following among the younger set. “People come up to me at tournaments,” he says, “and ask if I’m the guy (on the blog).” Develin, a math researcher who lives in Berkeley CA, started playing bridge a couple of years ago when his college roommate, Joon Pahk, taught him the game. He and John Barth won the Non-Life Master Pairs at the 2005 Fall NABC in Denver last year. It was at that tournament that Granell talked to Develin about doing the blog. It was a natural fit because of Develin’s infectious enthusiasm for the game. “I like the fact that there is a lot of psychology and that every hand is different,” Develin says. “Bridge will never appeal to everyone, but it is superior to a lot of hobbies. Bridge is the ultimate intellectual pastime.” Blogger aiming to attract young people to bridge Master at work John Diamond reported this deal from the Spingold Knockout Teams, played by Zia Mahmood, who was South. He cashed the .K and ruffed a heart in dummy before playing a second spade, taken by East with the ace. Zia was in when East returned a spade. He cashed the .K and two more spades, pitching a club and two diamonds from dummy. In the ending, Zia was down to the .AJ 2 in hand and the .Q and the .K 8 in dummy. East had to come down to two diamonds to keep his club guard, so in the end, when Zia played a diamond to dummy’s king and a second diamond, when East didn’t play the queen, Zia knew it was dropping on his left. East could have made it tougher on Zia had he played a diamond when in with the .A. That breaks up the squeeze and forces declarer to guess well in diamonds, and would have defeated the contract outright if West had held the .Q J originally. New Grand LM: Dick Budd Dick Budd of Portland ME is among the ACBL’s newest Grand Life Masters. Budd crossed the 10,000- masterpoint milestone this week in Chicago. To be a Grand LM, however, a player also needs a win in a major event, and Budd took care of that part of the requirement in 2000 when his team won the Senior Knockouts at the Fall NABC in Birmingham. His teammates were Pat McDevitt, Bill Hunter, Bob Ryder, Shome Mukherjee and Rich DeMartino. Budd, a retired theoretical physicist, designed computer systems for much of his career. Life Master news Sheila Kaye and Bob Sommerhalder, a married couple from Victoria BC, earned their gold cards on separate days at the Summer NABC but waited until they could report the happy news together. Kaye became an LM on Tuesday playing with her husband and Bob and Gail Deyell and Jan Stewart, all of Toronto, in the morning knockout teams. Sommerhalder made it Thursday in another KO event playing with Kaye and a Markham ON couple, Gord and Ruth Mori. Adam Kaplan is a new Bronze Life Master. The 10-year-old, who lives in New Port Richey FL, increased his masterpoint total to more than 500 in the Monday-Tuesday Knockout Teams playing with his dad, Todd Kaplan. Richard C. Smith of St. Louis became a Life Master when his squad won the Cort Larson Knockout Teams, Bracket VIII. His partner was Maggie Talbott, also of St. Louis. Their teammates were Helen Shopmaker of St. Louis and Anne Pierce of North York ON. Jane Morrissey of Hinsdale IL is now a Life Master, going over with her team (all of Hinsdale) in the Thursday-Friday knockout teams. Her partner was Kathy Gleason. Kovachev, of Sofia, Bulgaria, transferred to clubs and Alpert judged, again correctly in ny view, to show a club fit despite holding only a doubleton. In a regular partnership, Kovachev would have continued with 3., showing the shortage, but this was undiscussed and, rather than risk a misunderstanding, he just blasted the club slam on the strength of his two aces and seventh club. Quite naturally, West cashed a top spade. He switched to a diamond at trick two, but the damage was already done. Alpert won the king, played the .Q, ruffing out the king, ruffed dummy’s third diamond and pitched the .3 on her spade winner. The 2-2 club split meant that Alpert had the rest for a wonderful plus 1370. It was a lucky contract, perhaps, but South did everything right in the auction and the play. Devious discard Turk Melih Ozdil found an evil discard on this deal against none other than the top-rated player in the world, Italian Lorenzo Lauria. This deal occurred in Wednesday’s Spingold match between the teams captained by Amos Kaminski and Jimmy Cayne. Ozdil was playing with Canada’s George Mittelman; Lauria was playing with fellow countryman Alfredo Versace. Dlr: South . 4 Vul: None . Q 8 6 4 2 . A 7 6 4 . K 9 4 . A K Q 8 2 . Lauria tried a low club to dummy’s king (on which Ozdil played the 3), but Mittleman won the .A and continued with the .8. Lauria won the queen (Ozdil pitching the jack), before crossing to the .A (Ozdil pitching the 9) and ruffing a diamond with the .J. A spade ruff was next, followed by the dummy’s last diamond. West won the queen as declarer pitched his last club. And here, Ozdil dropped a fiendish .10 to make it look as if he had no more clubs. This was the ending: . — . Q 8 6 4 . — . 9 . K Q 2 . He cashed the .K and played a heart to the queen, conceding down one when the .10 didn’t appear. joined the crew during the 1996 Fall NABC in San Francisco, Russell at the 1999 Spring NABC in Vancouver BC and Cotterman at the 2000 Summer NABC in Anaheim. Nancy Foy, ACBL’s meeting planner for the past 15 years, knows the value of the group. “They are the most fun people I have ever worked with,” she says. “And they are the most dependable.” Johnston works with them closely, starting weeks before every NABC. He does the preplanning with the hotel to decide where events will be played and various offices located. He and the setup crew arrive two days before the NABC starts to unload the 42,000 pounds of equipment and supplies. During the tournament, the set-up crew keeps everything running, from making sure there is plenty of water in the playing areas to adjusting the temperature when needed. Johnston, who works at ACBL Headquarters in Memphis, is not a tournament director, but the others are, and Johnston is happy about that. “It’s essential that at least three of the four are TDs,” he says, “because they are setting up games and sections.” The crew’s esprit de corps is evident. They are always joking and laughing, and they handle every crisis – big or small – with aplomb. Russell jokes that they were chosen for their roles, “because we’re the only tournament directors fit enough and stupid enough” to take on the physical demands of the job. More seriously, he says, “With no other group could we work 10 hours a day and still be having fun.” Johnston says the set-up crew is a team in every sense of the word: “We’ve gotten so we can anticipate each other’s moves. We can almost read each other’s minds.” PTDAAwards Continued from page 1 Restaurant Bus to Chinatown Thinking about taking the restaurant bus to Chinatown on Saturday? Get your bus tickets in advance at the Special Events Desk, Convention card reminder Each player is required to have a convention card filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. Both cards of a partnership must be identical and include the first and last names of each member of the partnership. If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the ACBL Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director. Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director. If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances. The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations. In the semifinal round, Radin trailed the team captained by Kathy Baum after the first half by 14 IMPs. By the end of the third quarter, however, Radin had pulled ahead by 8. Baum was held to only 3 IMPs in the last set, as Radin rocketed to a 164-101 win. In the other bracket, Kennedy grabbed an early lead against Hansa Narasimhan’s squad and never relinquished it. Kennedy led 97-65 at the half, but the margin of victory increased to 203- 126 at the end. Please note that other types of convention cards, such as the WBF convention card or homemade cards that do not sufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes. Goodwill message Remember – it’s in the spirit of the game to completely fill out your convention card. Your card tells others what system you play. Wouldn’t it be nice if you wrote your name on it, too? It’s a great way to meet new friends. Aileen Osofsky, Chairman National Goodwill Committee .... Dlr: South . Q J 5 Vul: None . K 10 6 3 . 5 4 . A 10 9 8 . K 10 6 4 3 . A 9 8 7 . A Q J 5 4 . 9 8 7 . 3 . K 10 2 . Q 7 . 6 3 2 . 2 . 2 . A Q J 9 8 7 6 . K J 5 4 West North East South 1. 2. 2NT 4. 5. All Pass West led a low spade to the queen and Katz’s ace. Katz could see that the diamond finesse was working for declarer and he wanted to deflect him from the right course, so he fired back a spade, deliberately setting up a trick for declarer he could not get any other way. Declarer discarded his losing heart and Katz’s partner, Dan Goldfein, won the .K. He then tried to cash the .A, but declarer ruffed. Now South had a parking place for his two low clubs, and he fell from grace by playing a low club to dummy’s ace in order to pitch the .5 and .4 from his hand. This plan, of course, works only if Katz started with a singleton or doubleton .K. The diamond finesse worked, but declarer could not get back to dummy to repeat it, so he finished one down. It was a 6-IMP gain for Katz’s team. At the other table, South played 4., making six for plus 170. Page 14 Daily Bulletin THURSDAY-SATURDAY A.M.
