Bids that Require Advance Preparation

2/1
Transfer Responses to 1C
1C includes most balanced hands not in NT range
1D is 4+ unbal, or 5+ balanced

2D 10-15 HCP, 4S 5+H (Flannery)

With 13 HCP, many but not all hands open 1N when NV

General Bidding Style

Generally light initial actions, conservative responses when we don't have a fit.

We open aggressively nonvul and fairly standard vulnerable.

We tend not to pass 1C if we can do something

When nonvul, weak 2s can be 5 cards, 3 level preempts are rather light

Opening Leads AND Leads in the Middle of the Hand

3/low vs suits, Attitude against NT

Rusinow from 4+ against NT with K as power
-- e.g. Q from KQx or QJx but J or small from QJxx

Rusinow against suits

Coded 9s and 10s mid hand

Attitude mid hand - if need count for cashing out, then it is 3/5th

Defensive Signals

UDCA - primary signal is attitude

When partner leads a suit in which we are known to have 5+length, a middle card is encouraging, high or low is suit preference.

We try to figure out based on situation whether count or suit preference will be most useful when attitude is known.

First discard is generally upside down attitude but may have suit preference overtones in a suit where attitude is known.

Standard remainder count when giving count after first round.

Trump play suit preference if meaningful.
