Bids that Require Advance Preparation

- 2D = multi (weak two in a major)
- 2M VUL = ~10–14 6+M
- 2H NV = preempt with both majors; usually (45)+
- 2S NV = preempt 5+S, 4+m
- 3NT = preempt in either minor
- 4m = good opening in the corresponding M (4C = hearts, 4S = spades)

- Transfers after we open 1C
- Transfers after we open or overcall 1M and you double
- Many transfers and switches after you overcall, (e.g., 1C - (1S) - 2D = hearts)

General Bidding Style

2/1 GF
SNT
1C can be two (including all 18–19 balanced hands without 5M and 4=4=3=2 WNT)
1D shows 4 (can be balanced if 12–14)
With 4D5C, open 1C.
With 4D4C, might open either minor.
1M shows 5 (rarely 4 in 3rd or 4th seat)

May open light 3rd seat.

1NT NV = (13+)14–16
1NT VUL = (14+)15–17
JF might shade 1NT openings.

Preempts favorable in first seat and heart preempts may be aggressive. Other preempts tend to be sound (especially CD's).

Openings:
2D = multi
2M VUL = ~10–14 6+M (like 1M - 1NT; 2M)
2H NV = preempt with both majors, usually (45) or better
2S NV = preempt with 5+S 4+m
3NT = preempt in either minor
4m = good 4M opening; about AKQ-8th and a K

1C - 1D = hearts
1C - 1H = spades
1C - 1S = 4+C various hands
1C - 1NT = 6–10 bal
1C - 2C = D less than INV or GF
1C - 2D = 6+D INV

Opener's double is usually either 3cd support and a desire to compete, or extras (NOT support).

Opening Leads AND Leads in the Middle of the Hand

NT opening leads:
4th (usually high or second highest from a bad holding)
Honor leads rusinow from 4+ (K power), standard from 3 or less.
T = JTxx(+), KJTx(+), AJTx(+), T9x, Tx (maybe Txx)
J = QJxx(+), AQJx(+), JTx, Jx (maybe KQJx(+))
Q = KQxx(+), AKQx(+), QJx, Qx (maybe KQJx(+))
K = power---asks count or unblock
A = AK(+).
We might underlead any honor sequence.

Suit opening leads:
3rd from even, low from odd.
Honor leads standard. A from AK except:
- AK tight,
- in partner's suit, or
- 'alarm clock' K---usually shifting to a side singleton;
or
- at the 5+ level, or
- when declarer opened at the 3-level or higher.
In the last two cases, K asks for count.

Defensive Signals

UDCA.

Against NT, reverse smith ONLY at T2 (unless honor layout is common knowledge, or if 'obvious' count situation).

On A lead against NT, most encouraging (lowest) card asks partner to continue with the K.

Attitude on partner's lead. Usually count on declarer's lead. Second card in a suit often suit preference.
