General Bidding Style

We open balanced 12 counts and some unbalanced 10s and 11s. CD may pass some balanced 12 counts VUL.

We may open very light 3rd seat, especially with a good suit.

1m shows 3 cards. 3–3 in the minors opens 1C; 4–4 might open either. We might occasionally open 1C with 4 diamonds and 3 clubs.

1M shows 5 cards. May be 4 in 3/4 seat with a good suit and a minimum.

1NT = good 14–17.

Preempts are normal-to-sound; except first seat favorable, 3-level preempts are very light (Qxxxxx x xxx xxx might open 3S).

Opening Leads AND Leads in the Middle of the Hand

Against suits: 3rd/low and standard honor leads. A from AK, except: AK doubleton, 5-level or higher, declarer preempted at the 3-level or higher, or as an 'alarm clock'.

Against NT: 4th, but we usually lead high from xxx and high or second-highest from xxxx(x) (but low in partner's unsupported suit). The K asks for unblock or count, and other honor leads are Rusinow from 4+:
A = AKx, AKxx+
K = unblock or count
Q = QJx, KQx, KQxx+
J = JTx, HJT, QJxx+, KQJx+, AQJx+
T = T9x, HT9, JTxx+, HJTx+
9 = 9xx, H98, T9xx+, HT9x+
8 = 8xx, 87xx+, 98xx+, H98x+, 4th best

Mid-hand, spot-card leads are attitude and K asks for count.

Defensive Signals

At T1, standard carding if following suit. After T1, UDCA and standard suit preference.

Reverse smith ONLY at T2 in NT (low = 'likes' suit led), but count if entryless dummy has a long suit we might need to hold up in.

On partner's lead, attitude > count > suit-preference. On declarer's lead, count > suit-preference.

Suit-preference only in 'clear' situations: when singleton in dummy, when giving a ruff, when known we cannot take any more tricks in the suit. In suit preference situations, Q and higher is informative, not high suit-preference. When leading a pusher in suit-preference situations, may play Q and T are 'high' suit preference, and J and 9 are 'low'.

Discards are upside-down (attitude > count > suit-preference).
