Hands with 6-3 or 5-4 in minors (and 2-2 in majors) are treated as balanced. Also hands with a 5 card major that is 5-3-3-2 is treated as balanced. Therefore an opening of 1 diamond (or 1NT) could have a 5 card major or 6 card club suit.
