Bids that Require Advance Preparation

No bids that require advance preparation, except 3NT opening means a good 8 card Major with two defensive values on the side.

General Bidding Style

5-card Majors, Strong NT, 2/1 GF (except minor suit rebid)

We open 11-12 Bal., and 9-11 Unbal.

1 level overcalls 8+ HCP, 2 level sounder

1NT could have 5-card Major or 6-card minor (rarer), may have singleton A or K

Preempts: wide range (could be good or bad), depending on vulnerability

Frequently upgrade or downgrade hands due to specific shape (e.g. may well open a 9 HCP hand if it only contains six losers and may not open a 12 HCP hand with eight losers)

Opening Leads AND Leads in the Middle of the Hand

Spot card and honor leads standard and the same during middle of hand (to the extent possible)

No specific defined exceptions to general rules but occasionally will violate lead conventions if something in the bidding/play suggests doing so

Generally lead A from AK when we want partner’s attitude towards suit; will lead K from AK if we want count in suit or an unblocking action (against NT); if partner leads K form KQ, will still give count/unblock unless location of A is obvious

Defensive Signals

Primary signal to partner’s play is attitude (standard), unless obvious suit preference situation; primary signal to opponent’s play is count.

Smith Echo vs NT (high encourages opening lead suit), except in obvious count situation.
