Bids that Require Advance Preparation

We play a natural 2/1 system that is forcing to 3NT or 4 of a minor. Soloway-style jump shifts at the two level, intermediate natural jumps at the 3 three level, and fit-showing jumps in competition and by a passed hand.

General Bidding Style

Our opening bids and preempts are relatively sound in first and second seats; somewhat lighter and more aggressive not vulnerable, and in third seat. Our 1NT range is 14+ to 17 HCP.

Opening Leads AND Leads in the Middle of the Hand

3rd and 5th against suits; 4th best against NT. Reverse Smith against NT with the default being to play low unless we want a shift. We lead low from three small in partner's suit unless we have supported it. We lead A from AK unless the suit has been bid and raised, in which case we lead high. Against NT, if from length, Ace requests unblock or count while King asks for attitude.

Defensive Signals

Upside down count and attitude against both suits and NT. Odd-even first discard against both suits and NT. Our general philosophy is to signal only when believing it may be helpful to partner, or if intending to deceive declarer. General order of priority is attitude, count, then suit preference.
