Bids that Require Advance Preparation

Transfer responses over 1C (2+).

1D is unbalanced, 5+D except with any 4D441.

1D-1H = 4+S.

1D-1S = 4+H.

2D Multi = Weak Two bid in a major (3-9 HCP, 5-card suit OK) May be very aggressive, particularly at favorable vulnerability.

If 2nd hand passes, responder may pass. Non-vulnerable can be done with any hand, vulnerable would indicate some diamonds

2H/S = 6+H/6+S, approximately 10-13 pts

Over NT, we play:

2C=MM; 2D=1M; 2H=H+m; 2S=S+m; 2NT=5+5+Mm 4-4.5 loser hand

Double = good hand against weak NT, and 4 card major with longer minor against strong NT

1C-1NT = 11-12 HCP.

1C-2H = Limit raise by UPH.

1D-2H = Limit raise or balanced 11-12 by UPH.

1m-2S = Mixed raise (6-9 pts, 5+ fit) by UPH.

1H-2S = 3-card limit raise with unknown shortness.

1H-2NT = Jacoby GF raise.

1S-2NT = 3-card limit raise with unknown shortness.

1S-3C = Jacoby GF raise.

1M-3(M-2) = Mixed raise (6-9 HCP, 4+ fit) by UPH

1M-3(M-1) = 4-card limit raise by UPH.

1M-2C by PH = 3-card support, 8-bad 11.

1M-2D by PH = 4+-card support, 7-bad 11.

1H-2S = mixed raise with unknown shortness.

1S-2NT = mixed raise with unknown shortness.

Lower-tier Splinter shows a singleton and higher-tier Splinter shows a void by PH.

FSJ by PH.

Transfers after 1M opening/overcall-(X) starting from 1NT

Transfer advances start from cue-bid.

After 3C preempt – 3D is asking for 3card major

General Bidding Style

5-Card Major, forcing NT by UPH.

1NT 14-16, 13+-16 3rd seat favorable, 15-17 3rd seat vulnerable and 4th seat.

We open 11 or 12 balanced, and 10-11 Unbalanced. Also apply rule of 20. 3rd-seat openings can be as low as 8 and 4-card suit often not vulnerable.

1M-2C = 2+C, GF, start of a relay.

1H-2D or 1S-2D/2H = Rebid of 2M shows 6+M and 14+ HCP (unless 6H4S – then 12+ HCP). Next step starts a relay.

1M-2D & 1S-2H = 5+ GF

Gazzilli after 1M-1NT, 1H-1S

Two-tier splinters, regular splinters 12-14 HCP (1H-3S, 1S-3NT: 9-11 HCP)

We open all balanced hands with 1C.

Walsh style responses after 1C opening

May respond with very weak hand.

One-level overcalls 8+ HCP. 2-level sounder.

Preempts: wide range (could be good or bad)

Opening Leads AND Leads in the Middle of the Hand

vs NT: 4th best, 2nd or top from bad holdings (10xx(+) can be treated as good or bad), Rusinow from 4+ with the following exceptions:

Not in dummy's suit.
Not in partner's suit.
Not in declarer's suit.
Not in preemptor's side suit.

vs NT: 3rd/5th in partner's suit (unless raised, then top from 3 small)

vs NT: K is power lead and A asks for attitude.

vs suits: standard honor leads

vs suits: 3rd from even or three, lowest from odd, but will lead top from nothing in partner's raised suit. suit preference from known long suits (6-7 card preempts)

vs suits: A from AKx(+) except against 5-level or higher, or AK doubleton, or ready to switch to a side singleton.

Mainly attitude in the middle of the hand. Will lead 3/5 if the spot won't confuse partner.

0 or 2 through declarer and dummy's Qxx.

Defensive Signals

Upside Down Count and Attitude Signals.

Signaling priority normally: Attitude, Count, Suit-Preference (may vary with logic).

Standard count at trick one when opening leader leads the A from AK vs suits.

Attitude in partner's suit if dummy wins trick-1 with A, K, or Q vs NT, count otherwise.

Suit preference when dummy has a singleton, middle is ambiguous (no clear preference) - unless necessity to tap dummy is obvious for both.

Suit-preference in trumps if we think partner needs it.

Rev Smith Echo vs NT mostly by opening leader's partner (low encourages opening lead suit), except in obvious count situation. Suit preference if attitude is known and count is irrelevant.

When splitting honors, we play the second highest if we have two honors (J from QJx, Q from KQx), the highest if we have three honors (K from KQJ, Q from QJ10).

Standard suit preference (1st priority) and present count.

We give true count only if we think partner needs it.
