Bids that Require Advance Preparation
1m (P) 2 by an UPH shows a balanced invitation with no 4-card major
1m (1 ) Dbl = 4 or 5  (could be six small)
1m (1 ) 2 = 6+, ~6+ HCP

1 = Values with no 4-card major

General Bidding Style
| Standard American with gadgets. In first and second seats we open all balanced 11 counts NV. We are not slaves to point-count and will use our judgment to upgrade and downgrade.
Our third-set NV openings can be quite light - they look more like overcalls. Most doubles of part-scores are for takeout. Our 1N opening shows 14-16 HCP NV in 1st through 3rd and 15-17 HCP Vul or in 4th seat. It can contain a five-card major. |
Opening Leads AND Leads in the Middle of the Hand

3rd from even, low from odd vs suits, 4th best from the J or T9 or better vs NT Honor leads vs Suits A from AK through the 4-level. K from AK when planning to switch to a singleton Honor leads vs NT A from AKx(+), K for count or unblock. Rusinow from 4+ card holdings otherwise. Exceptions: • Partner’s suit • Dummy’s suit • By a preemptor in a side suit K from KQ vs NT when the auction has shown a source of tricks, since we'll often lead an unsupported ace. After trick one Spot card leads are attitude or 4th best vs both suits and NT, with 2nd and 4th through declarer when dummy is weak. Honor leads are standard. Splits We normally split with the lowest of two touching honors or the highest of three or more. |
Defensive Signals
| Upside-down count and attitude. Standard Smith echos.
When dummy in a suit contract holds Qxx or longer and partner leads the ace our signal is attitude. Normally that means low only from a doubleton. Against a slam, though, we'll give count! By default attitude (upside-down) on partner's leads and for our first discard, then standard present count, but when we can figure out what partner needs to know urgently we'll attempt to give the signal that will do him the most good. We try to signal only when it will help partner more than declarer. On honor leads vs NT other than the K we tend to give attitude when dummy has two cards or fewer, count when dummy has 3 or more. |
